Creating A Curriculum From Scratch: Where To Begin
Home schools are required to follow the curriculum approved by the public schools in their area. Your first step in creating a curriculum from scratch is to call your local board of education and ask them for a copy of their schools curriculum. You will be asked if you are looking for grade school or for secondary school curriculum. You will also be asked what specific grade level you are looking to create a curriculum from scratch. Making a curriculum is easy, but if it does not meet the standards of your local board of education, it will not be helpful to the student for whom you are preparing a curriculum.Additional information can be found at http://flatchat.wordpress.com/2011/09/15/ipad-curriculum/.
Once you have a copy of a public school curriculum, you can begin to choose the types of books, videos, instructional material like workbooks, tablets, mathematical tools like protractors and other paraphernalia that school have available. For the most part, you can plan on keeping to the old reading, writing and arithmetic curriculum for grade schools which means from grades one to eight. Taking time to find testing material will also be important for that age level. Part of all curriculum is subject and test to determine comprehension of the student of the curriculum studied.
For grades nine to twelve, you should find subject matter in English, Mathematics, Economics and History. These subjects are general in term but are studied in specifics. If one can find books and workbooks for each of those subjects one has a better chance at developing a curriculum of study that will be considered secondary education. A curriculum is a course of study that is specific to grade, age, and student. Some students may need a curriculum that is less academic and more general. Before proceeding with your curriculum, you can have the student tested by a psychologist or you can have the student tested by the local school district.
